Port Wing is located about halfway between Superior and Bayfield, Wisconsin, on Highway 13, or straight north of Iron River on County Rd A. It is at the beginning of the South Shore area of Lake Superior, sometimes called the North Shore of Wisconsin. It is also the Western gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Park.

This area has many small trout streams draining the uplands of the Chequamagon National Forest, a remote area of hardwood forest uplands. The shores of Lake Superior in this area alternate between sandy beaches and sandstone outcroppings. Many of these were quarried in the 19th century, and some have caves that were created by wave and ice action.
